DestinE Q&A

  • What is Destination Earth or DestinE?
Destination Earth is an initiative of the European Commission’s DG CNECT, implemented by ECMWF, ESA and EUMETSAT and involving more than a hundred European institutions and research centres across Europe.  The objective is to create a digital replica of key aspects of the Earth system supporting climate change adaptation, using the most powerful supercomputer systems in Europe, provided by the EuroHPC Joint Undertaking.

  • What is ECMWF’s role in it?
ECMWF oversees the development of the first two high priority digital twins on Climate Change Adaptation and Weather-Induced Extremes, together with large consortia of European partners led by the CSC-IT Center for Science (Climate DT) and Météo France (Extremes DT).  We are also implementing the Digital Twin Engine, the innovative software architecture enabling the complex operations of the digital twins, including machine learning and artificial intelligence, data fusion and the handling of the huge data volumes generated by the digital twins in the EuroHPC JU supercomputers.  ECMWF and its partners have made considerable progress since the launch of the initiative in 2022, with some encouraging first results in all three components. During the second phase (2024-2027) the European Commission has reinforced the integration of ML/AI technology in the system.

Destination Earth is a European Union-funded initiative launched in 2022, with the aim to build a digital replica of the Earth system by 2030. The initiative is being jointly implemented under the leadership of the EU Commission’s DG CNECT by three entrusted entities: the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF), responsible for the creation of the first two ‘digital twins’ and the ‘Digital Twin Engine’, the European Space Agency (ESA) responsible for building the ‘Core Service Platform’, and the European Organisation for the Exploitation of Meteorological Satellites (EUMETSAT), responsible for the creation of the ‘Data Lake’.

We acknowledge the EuroHPC Joint Undertaking for awarding this project strategic access to the EuroHPC supercomputers LUMI, hosted by CSC (Finland), and the LUMI consortium, Marenostrum5, hosted by BSC (Spain) Leonardo, hosted by Cineca (Italy) and MeluXina, hosted by LuxProvide (Luxembourg) through a EuroHPC Special Access call.
