As part of the various Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) activities within DestinE, the development of new ML-based Earth system components plays a key role.

This video introduces the development of the new ML-based sea ice component in DestinE, which learns directly from decades of high-quality reanalysis data to model the evolution of sea ice and surface-ocean conditions.

When forced by atmospheric predictions, the ML model can accurately represent the complex sea ice evolution, capturing both typical seasonal cycles and challenging ice-edge behaviour.
