Machine Learning for Earth Systems Modelling: register now for first training course

Discover how machine learning (ML) is transforming extreme weather prediction and climate science. Under the Destination Earth (DestinE) initiative of the European Commission, ECMWF is launching the first training course in a new series of three free online courses on ML for Earth systems modelling.  Register now

This first introductory course provides a structured entry point into ML for Earth system science, connecting core ML concepts with physical modelling and real-world applications.

  • 16 March – 17 April 2026
  • Online, self-paced
  • Around 10 hours

Who is it for?

Course 1 targets a broad audience of high-level information users and policy/decision-makers from European public and private sectors, academia, and industry. It is also well suited to non-ML technical professionals seeking an accessible introduction to ML in Earth Systems modelling.

What you’ll gain:

  • A clear understanding of the components of ML applied to Earth Systems modelling
  • Insights about the recent history and evolving role of ML in weather and climate simulations
  • An overview of how ML is used within the DestinE initiative
  • Awareness of ethical and regulatory frameworks
  • An overview of emerging trends shaping the future of the Earth Systems community

 Register now

This course is the first in a three-course series, with more advanced and hands-on courses launching in mid–late 2026. Interested in Course 2 or Course 3? Show your interest by filling in this form: Machine Learning in Earth System Science – form. You will receive an update when new learning materials or courses become available.

Destination Earth is a European Union funded initiative launched in 2022, with the aim to build a digital replica of the Earth system by 2030. The initiative is being jointly implemented by three entrusted entities: the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) responsible for the creation of the first two ‘digital twins’ and the ‘Digital Twin Engine’, the European Space Agency (ESA) responsible for building the ‘Core Service Platform’, and the European Organisation for the Exploitation of Meteorological Satellites (EUMETSAT), responsible for the creation of the ‘Data Lake’.

We acknowledge the EuroHPC Joint Undertaking for awarding this project strategic access to the EuroHPC supercomputers LUMI, hosted by CSC (Finland) and the LUMI consortium, Marenostrum5, hosted by BSC (Spain) Leonardo, hosted by Cineca (Italy) and MeluXina, hosted by LuxProvide (Luxembourg) through a EuroHPC Special Access call.

More information about Destination Earth is on the Destination Earth website and the EU Commission website.
