Communication Services ITT for DestinE open

Help us tell the story of Destination Earth (DestinE)

9 September 2024

Do you have a passion for organising complex events from A-Z? The European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) is inviting proposals for communication services to help us promote our contribution to the ambitious initiative of the European Commission to build a digital twin of the Earth. The invitation to tender is open until 30 September.

The aim of this tender is to boost awareness and reach a variety of target audiences as DestinE moves forward in developing digital twins of different aspects of the Earth system. Be part of this unique initiative of the EU to boost climate resilience, in the context of Europe’s Green Deal and the digital transformation.

Scope of the Communications Services tender

The ITT seeks a communications agency to work closely with ECMWF’s DestinE Communication Team, delivering a range of services that promote DestinE’s objectives and activities. We are looking for partners that help us create outstanding events, raise awareness, engage stakeholders, and highlight the progress being made through DestinE.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Event Management: Seamless organisation of virtual, hybrid, and in-person events aimed at international audiences that enable dialogue, knowledge exchange, and networking opportunities for the DestinE community.
  • Monitoring Media and Social Media Services: Monitoring global media and social platforms, preparing reports for KPI’s, and supporting targeted campaigns to help us build on past successes.

ECMWF communications regarding DestinE include a wide range of events that aim to bring together key stakeholders and inform about the developments of the initiative.

The User eXchange event series, designed to foster dialogue between stakeholders and encourage collaboration in DestinE, are a complex and exciting international forum demanding creativity and faultless organisation skills. These meetings are taking place all over Europe and are co-organised with the European Space Agency (ESA) and the European Organisation for the Exploitation of Meteorological Satellites (EUMETSAT). For example, the successful 2nd User eXchange was hosted by ECMWF in Bonn last year and attracted more than 400 participants onsite and online combined. It explored the significant progress made to date as well as foster conversations around DestinE.

Be part of the Destination Earth initiative to build a digital replica of the planet by applying for the tender and contributing to Europe’s efforts to tackle the climate crisis.

Why and how to apply

The new information system built in the scope of DestinE can help to navigate future climate policies and mitigate the impacts of extreme weather events. The second phase of DestinE (2024 – 2026) successfully started this June with a high-level event from the LUMI supercomputer centre in Finland. In this phase, the focus lies on ramping up the system as well as integrating machine learning and artificial intelligence techniques.

The selected communications partner will be an important part in promoting ECMWF’s work on DestinE, facilitating engagement, and ensuring that DestinE’s Digital Twins become accessible tools for decision-makers, industry, research, and technology providers alike.

It is essential that this information reaches the right audience, and the successful candidate will help us to ensure that DestinE efforts are understood by both specialists and the wider community.

The ITT is open to agencies with expertise in high-quality communications, media relations, and event management. Proposals can be submitted via the ECMWF website, with a deadline of 30 September.

Destination Earth is a European Union-funded initiative launched in 2022, with the aim to build a digital replica of the Earth system by 2030. The initiative is being jointly implemented under the leadership of DG CNECT by three entrusted entities: the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF), responsible for the creation of the first two ‘digital twins’ and the ‘Digital Twin Engine’, the European Space Agency (ESA) responsible for building the ‘Core Service Platform’, and the European Organisation for the Exploitation of Meteorological Satellites (EUMETSAT), responsible for the creation of the ‘Data Lake’.

We acknowledge the EuroHPC Joint Undertaking for awarding this project strategic access to the EuroHPC supercomputers LUMI, hosted by CSC (Finland), and the LUMI consortium, Marenostrum5, hosted by BSC (Spain) Leonardo, hosted by Cineca (Italy) and MeluXina, hosted by LuxProvide (Luxembourg) through a EuroHPC Special Access call.
