Artificial Intelligence in Destination Earth at ECMWF

This page serves as a hub for all artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) activities led by ECMWF and its many partners in the Destination Earth (DestinE) initiative of the European Commission. Explore our latest news on AI and ML in DestinE, explainers as well as multimedia content like video interviews, animations, podcasts and much more.

In phase II of DestinE, AI and ML are playing an increasingly central role. ML-driven models and AI-based software solutions will boost DestinEs capabilities to quantify uncertainty in digital twins simulations and the interactivity of the DestinE system, leveraging the world-class supercomputing infrastructure of the European High-Performance Computing Joint Undertaking (EuroHPC’s).

DestinE’s ML activities are closely linked and complementary to the efforts led by ECMWF and its Member States. The initiatives rapid progress builds on the foundation laid by ECMWF project and the ML pilot project with the Member States and more particularly on the development of:

The cutting-edge EuroHPC supercomputing capabilities provides an optimal setting for AI training activities, directly supporting Europe’s efforts to develop a new generation of AI models for weather and climate.

AI in Phase II of DestinE: Objectives and scope

  • Development of ML-based Earth system model components enabling progress towards a European ML-based Earth system model
  • Enhancement of the Digital Twin Engine (DTE) software infrastructure to support the training and operation of machine learning models on EuroHPC systems.
  • Application of AI to support uncertainty quantification of the digital twin simulations
  • Use of AI to enhance the interactivity of the system and to enhance the usability of digital twin data.

Collaboration on AI in DestinE

Learn more about the benefits of using AI and ML models for weather and climate. Interviewees in order of appearance: Stefanie Hollborn (DWD), José Gonzalez-Abad (Predictia), Gabriela Aznar Siguan (Meteo Swiss), Rilwan Adewoyin (ECMWF), Sophie Buurman (KNMI).

European collaboration at its best

Collaboration plays a key role for AI development at ECMWF in the DestinE initiative. One prime example for this cross boarder collaboration, was the DestinE ML Retreat in Norway. Over 70 experts from 14 countries came together to share insights, align efforts, and explore what’s needed to move forward in ML-based modelling for weather and climate.
